The Challenges of System-to-System Integrations

Traditional methods for modifying the electronic systems of modern aircraft are often expensive and time consuming. Using custom printed circuit boards or a discrete single-function piece of hardware can bring challenges to the integrator as they face safety, software testing and certification issues. NEXSYS Component Technology, from Applied Avionics, provides design engineers an innovative alternative that is reliable, cost effective and available with the speed of COTS deliverability.

NEXSYS® Component Technology

NEXSYS Component Technology is a platform of 12 solid-state micro components that enables system designers to create custom avionic solutions.

Functional components including latching flip-flops, solid state relays, Boolean logic gates, voltage sensors, pulse/timers, electronic rotaries, diodes and terminal junctions can be combined to create over 1,000,000 possible configuration options in a small form factor enclosure that offers unparalleled design flexibility. NEXSYS components can be configured inside VIVISUN® lighted pushbutton switches, as well as inside NEXSYS Modules. Switches and Modules, each configured with NEXSYS components, can be used together to create advanced solutions.

NEXSYS Component Technology can be used to provide additional system features or provide quick solutions to unexpected changes or issues that can occur in the installation phase of a project.

Additional features/benefits include:

  • Quick and easy certification due to complete RTCA DO-160 and MIL-STD testing and contain no software or firmware.
  • Low power NEXSYS components have virtually no load on aircraft power systems or standby battery and are compatible with existing aircraft system voltage levels.
  • Replace existing relay logic and time delays with solid-state, SWaP optimized alternatives.
  • Advanced applications can be achieved by interfacing multiple NEXSYS components together.
  • Address system interface problems, such as, changing a momentary signal to latched, adding time delays, signal buffering, polarity inversion, voltage sensing or establishing the enable/disable operation to occur only when a defined set of conditions exists.

NEXSYS Components

NEXSYS components are available as 12 separate functions that will come in one of four series designations (Series A, Series C, Series N and Series R). These series designations correlate to the physical dimensions and the number of pins within each component series (i.e. - all Series A components have the same width and is a 4 pin device).

What Electrical System Design Engineers are Saying

The following are Applied Avionics’ customer testimonials about their use of NEXSYS Component Technology.

The benefits of using NEXSYS Component Technology is the flexibility for a design engineer to implement an infinite number of complex control circuits in a fraction of the size of standard military grade products. I was able to use NEXSYS Component Technology to create products for my customers that exceeded their expectations, while saving space, weight, time and money and increasing reliability.

Abel Z., Electrical Engineering Manager

I was able to solve a problem that arose late in the testing phase using NEXSYS Component Technology. The robust, lightweight and configurable design allowed for a design change that was quickly implemented and with minimal impacts to the aircraft or schedule.

Paul R., Electrical Systems DER

NEXSYS Component Technology provides simple and robust solutions to my designs because they allow the flexibility to incorporate multiple functions in a compact solution, thus reducing the number of external components that are normally required for designing multifunctional circuits.

Zac F., Electrical Systems Engineer

The biggest advantage to using NEXSYS Component Technology is the reduction of bill of materials and less production time during terminations.

Jim K., Avionics/Electrical Engineer

NEXSYS Component Technology has dramatically reduced my development time and costs. I've been able to eliminate custom electronic assemblies and the associated DO-160 environmental testing. My engineering effort has been reduced from man-months to a few man-days on most projects. The ability to go from conceptual design to an installed, fully tested and robust solution with a DO-160 pedigree in just a few weeks has completely changed the way we approach our custom aircraft integration projects.
